Gayla is the recipient of a 2018 Artist Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board to support work on her manuscript in progress. "Cooking in Paradise" is a collection of essays about her college year in Tunisia and its lasting impact on her life and relationship with cooking and food ways.
This activity was made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board and an operating grant from the East Central Regional Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage fund. Tickets $10 benefit Pine Center for the Arts.

In Little Falls I stopped in at Bookin' It, a truly wonderful independent bookstore, and visited with owner Laura Hansen (right) and her staff member Katie.
In 1930, a Minnesotan was the first writer from the United States to win the Nobel Prize for literature. My route included Sauk Centre, hometown of Sinclair Lewis, so I took the opportunity to stay in the historic Palmer House on the original Main Street.

One of the largest collections of antique farm machinery in east central Minnesota also features demos of grain threshing, lumber sawing, plowing, rug looming, quilting, schoolhouse, kids games and crafts, and this year for the first time—a corn maze.

For a triple bill on a farm theme, I joined local authors Joyce Sutphen, center (award-winning poetry including Coming Back to the Body), and Catherine Friend, right (Hit by a Farm and The Compassionate Carnivore).
Raking Through Books is a happy-hour book club that takes place on the second Tuesday of most months of the year. The book club connects readers and writers in a casual setting with plenty of time for questions, comments, profundity, and laughter. Refreshments, cash bar at Kieran’s Irish Pub.
